Henry VII (Henry VIII’s dad) married Elizabeth of York to stop fighting between Lancashire and Yorkshire and so the Tudor Rose was formed.

Henry VIII’s older brother Arthur married Catherine of Aragon before he died (age 15). Then Henry married her. They had 6 children but only one survived, her name was Mary.

Eventually, Henry VII and Catherine of Aragon got divorced because she didn’t give him a son. To do this he had to separate the Church of England from the Roman Catholic Church.

Next he married Anne Boleyn. She was lady in waiting to Catherine of Aragon. Anne Boleyn & Catherine Howard were cousins . Anne Boleyn had 6 fingers on one hand. They had 2 children a boy and a girl but only the girl survived. She was called Elizabeth and could speak many languages including French, Latin and German. She went on to become Queen Elizabeth I and ruled for 40 years. The longest reign in the Tudors.

Henry VIII suspected Anne Boleyn of having affairs with other men and she hadn’t given him a son so instead of divorcing her he executed her – “Off with her head!”.

Next it was Jane Seymour, she was able to give Henry a son but died 4 days later. She was Anne Boleyn’s lady in waiting. Henry would write love letters and try to pay her to be his girlfriend! When she said no because he already had Anne Boleyn he executed Anne and married Jane exactly one week after. Poor Anne! Henry had no more children.

After this came Anne of Cleves. Henry had seen her in a painting (they didn’t have camera’s back then) and sent for her immediately but when the time came for them to marry, Henry accused her of looking like a donkey and divorced her.

Katherine Howard was next. She was 19 when she married Henry, he was 49. She had 3 boyfriends (not including Henry) and when Henry found this out, he executed her.

The 6th wife was Katherine Parr. She was the kindest wife and outlived Henry. When he died she married Thomas Seymour (brother of Jane Seymour, wife number 3). Katherine and Henry were happy together.

When he was young he considered good looking and was slim. When he was older, his waist was 49 inches. Katherine Howard’s waist was 11 inches.

It is important to know that before Henry VIII there hadn’t been a queen. It was the tradition for men to rule.
